Central Falls welcomed 27-year-old City Councilman James Diossa as their new mayor Tuesday evening. The special election comes after former mayor Charles Moreau resigned in September and pleaded guilty to federal corruption charges. Diossa will now finish the one year left of Moreau's term.

The job comes with a lot of pressure as the city is just emerging from bankruptcy court but Diossa says he’s more than prepared. “I’m very happy with all the support that’s come out but the real work starts now. So I’ll celebrate once Central Falls becomes the best city again, but for now I just have to work hard,” said Diossa

Family, friends, supporters and other elected officials came out to celebrate Diossa’s victory

“I think it’s a historic day in Central Falls. James Diossa is really someone who can lead the city forward. . I’m very very proud of him and I’m proud of all the voters in Central Falls, I’m proud of  the campaign that he ran and I’m excited for the future” said Providence Mayor Angel Taveras.

Diossa defeated former Police Chief Joseph Moran III with more than 62% of the vote. Moran received 650 votes while Diossa received 1076.  

'The people of Central Falls spoke and we have to move on and make the city a better place to live," said Moran as he conceded Tuesday evening. Moran wished Diossa luck as mayor. "If I can assist in any way shape or form, I am open."

Another race for Central Falls mayor will be held in 2013. Moran said he is not sure if he will run again but he will not rule out the possibility.
