Governor Chafee wins praise for budget plan

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Gov. Lincoln Chafee continues to win praise from top lawmakers for his budget proposal.

The independent unveiled his recommended budget Wednesday night with his State of the State address.

Senate President Teresa Paiva Weed and House Speaker Gordon Fox say they both support Chafee's call to reduce the corporate income tax rate from 9 to 7 percent over three years to give the state the lowest rate in New England. The two Democrats said Chafee's budget proposal is their favorite of the three he's submitted since taking office in 2011.

House Republican Leader Brian Newberry says Chafee's plan is much better than earlier years' proposals, which called for more sales taxes.

House Finance Chairman Helio Melo says lawmakers will begin reviewing the $8.2 billion proposal within weeks.
