The public is being warned to stay off Providence ponds.
A news release from Mayor Angel Tavares’ office says the Providence Parks and Recreation Department is reminding the public that no ponds in Providence are currently safe for ice skating or any other activity on their surface.
The media advisory states that the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management suggests a minimum of a 6-inch layer of ice and according to the DEM, no Providence ponds meet that requirement yet.
The Providence Parks and Recreation Department has posted “Danger Thin Ice” signs at Roger Williams Park and other city parks with ponds as further reminder to the public.
